Participants were 46 CLKs of upper-intermediate proficiency who gave responses to MQs and DCTs. They were also asked to consider their evaluations and refusal performance in RIs. Their decisions were influenced primarily by four factors such as their personality and multilingual identities, their current lives as well as their relationships. They were asked to perform the DCTs in their native language and to complete the MQs either in their L1 or L2. The results showed that, on average, the CLKs disapproved of native-speaker pragmatic norms in over 40% of their responses. They did this even though they were able to produce patterns that resembled native speakers. They were aware of their practical resistance. They attributed their resistance to learner-internal variables such as their identities and personalities as well as multilingual identities.
